Abstract

This study's major objective is to examine the energy system implications of various low-carbon growth plans for the Nigerian transportation industry. This research aims to add to the state of the art in this field by providing a new technology-rich bottom-up transport model for Nigeria. The research deviated from standard simulation modelling frameworks such as LEAP by using TIMES, an optimisation modelling framework, to comprehend the influence of carbon pricing on Nigeria's transportation sector. This research, unlike many others in the literature, examined the cobenefits of sustainable energy transitions in the transport sector from the perspectives of improved air quality, energy security, and productive energy usage. It advances knowledge of transport sustainability in one of the world's least developed nations and, by extension, in the world's least developed areas. To explain the nature of sustainable transitions in the transportation sector, the present research investigates the policy implications of the various policy routes for the government, motorists, and average people. The case study presented here will give essential insights to improve low-carbon transport policy in Nigeria and, by extension, Africa.
