Engagement of Children in Conflict Zones in Africa: Ethical Dilemma

Abstract

In recent years, many children have participated in military conflicts. Underage soldiers have been recruited and deployed in Afghanistan, Angola, the Congo, El Salvador, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Uganda, and others. Thus, international relations (IR) should examine the effects of child soldiers on nation-states and their flaws. This study first investigated the issue of child soldiers and its impact on the African continent. This study also sheds light on the involvement of child soldiers in various armed conflicts, using many nations as illustrative examples. This research also analyses the ethical dilemma of children in war. This study shows that female child recruits are pressured sexually and enslaved, causing physical and mental hardship. This study also suggests that children soldiers, whether willingly or forced, experience anguish. Enlisting children in conflicts violates their rights, regardless of the reason. International humanitarian law considers enlisting minors in conflicts a crime against humanity and future generations.
