Abstract

Sports play a crucial role in the holistic development of youth in the Sub-West African region, but there are numerous challenges that hinder their effective use. Infrastructure deficits, limited access to training grounds, and inadequate funding for sports programmes and infrastructure are some of the main obstacles. Cultural norms and gender disparities also pose significant challenges, particularly affecting girls' access to sports and creating an imbalance between male and female youth opportunities. Additionally, a lack of awareness and education about the holistic advantages of sports further hinders its integration into mainstream youth development agendas. However, there are several prospects for transformative change, including investment in infrastructure development, targeted funding from governments, NGOs, and corporate entities, gender-inclusive policies and programmes, community engagement strategies, and technological advancements. Gender-inclusive policies and programmes, coupled with community engagement strategies, can promote equal opportunities for girls and boys in sports. Awareness campaigns and educational programmes can help dispel misconceptions and promote the benefits of sports in youth development. Technological advancements, such as online coaching resources, virtual training modules, and mobile applications, can reach a wider youth demographic, even in remote areas. Collaborative efforts among stakeholders, including government bodies, non-profit organisations, educational institutions, sports federations, and private sector entities, are essential in addressing these challenges and capitalising on the identified prospects. A cohesive approach that integrates policy reforms, sustainable funding mechanisms, community involvement, and robust educational initiatives can unlock the transformative power of sports in fostering holistic youth development across the Sub-West African region.
